Your pets need dental care as much as you do.

It’s easy to overlook your pet’s oral health. However, visits to Woodlawn Hospital for pet dental care follow the same logic as dental visits for people. Our pets eat and chew food every day, the same way we do. And like people, a pet’s overall health can be negatively impacted by untreated dental disease, even though you may be brushing every day. Annual veterinary visits can help ensure your pet’s overall good physical condition, including its oral health.

We can teach you how to manage your pet’s oral health at home, and offer advice on oral hygiene products.

Complete oral evaluation and treatment includes:

  • Scaling and polishing of teeth
  • Full-mouth dental X-rays
  • Dental tooth charts
  • ** Take home oral hygiene care
  • ***Oral surgery for extractions

** Take home oral hygiene care priced separately.

*** The need for surgical extraction cannot be determined before oral X-rays are performed.  Extractions priced separately.

Dental procedures are performed while pets are under general anesthesia. Our goal is to manage pets in a relaxed and pain-free state.  All oral evaluations and treatments include pre-anesthetic blood work, general anesthesia, and fluid therapy during treatment. Also, regional nerve blocks are performed when oral surgery is needed to extract teeth, which assures a pain-free dental extraction experience.

Three reasons oral health care for cats and dogs is essential

REASON #1 – PAIN

Pain is a reality of dental disease, and our pets can’t tell us when they’re hurting. Untreated tooth decay and gum disease eventually cause swelling, redness, severe pain, and unnecessary tooth loss for pets, just as for people. Signs your pet is in pain include the following:

  • Pets that are “just not themselves”
  • Lethargy or loss of engagement
  • Whining or crying
  • Loss or change of appetite
  • Pawing at the face
  • Vocalizing when yawning or sneezing
  • Foul odor from the mouth
  • Excessive drooling
  • Unexplained dropping of food

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait! It’s time to call and schedule an appointment – 773-249-7191

REASON #2 – SYSTEMIC DISEASE

Dental decay and inflammation cause build-up of bacteria from plaque and gingivitis that can leak toxins into the bloodstream of pets. When that happens, oral disease can lead to kidney disease, liver damage, cardiovascular disease and heart failure.

Some breeds are particularly predisposed to joint and bone problems stemming from gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

The best defense against dental related disease in our pets is regularly scheduled oral care with our experts.

All cats and dogs need dental care

REASON #3 – X-RAY

The third reason it’s important to schedule a full oral health evaluation with us is that many dental problems are invisible, especially during early stages when they are easiest to treat. The only way they can be diagnosed and treated properly is by full dental x-rays. The process is like that for people, and we have the most advanced digital dental x-ray technology to get the information we need. No matter how well you’re maintaining for your pet’s oral hygiene at home, they still need a full dental evaluation by a veterinarian annually for the same reason you visit your dentist. As Dr. Harris, “We brush, we floss, but we still gotta go.”

Dental x-rays help us diagnose and treat dental disease below the gum line. This is important because it’s potentially before bigger, more painful and expensive problems.

Dental care is essential for pets. Woodlawn can help.MOST COMMON QUESTION: WHY CAN’T I GET A PRICE UPFRONT?

You’ll need to call to schedule a visit with us for an estimate of your dental care visit so that we can quote you an accurate price based on your pet’s weight and dental needs. Dental evaluation and treatment varies widely based on the weight of the pet, presenting symptoms, and the results of x-rays and blood work, and treatment needed. The need for surgical extraction, and the number of teeth that need to be removed, for example, cannot be determined before full-mouth dental x-rays are performed.

No surprises at Woodlawn! We’ll discuss your estimate, treatment needed, and we’ll explain why we recommend treatment before the cost of treatment overruns your budget. We also help clients stage veterinary care according to their budgets, keeping in mind the most essential healthcare concerns first.
